Mental Clarity

Image
Four days of high raw and I feel like a new person. I can't get over how amazing the raw diet is. As I mentioned yesterday , I've been eating about 95% fresh fruit and veggies and I've regained the mental clarity I lost over the past 6 months. Like I used to in the beginning, I woke up bright and early today (at 6:45am) and felt totally alert and ready to go. I went upstairs to our super new loft that I'm turning into my yoga/dance harem and did 20 minutes of yoga from Yoga Download to get my day going. It was delicious. ( photo source ) Despite the fact that it's also super hot up here (yep, even Canadians get 35C/95F degree weather sometimes!), we trekked all around town and I managed to survive 30 minutes of sweaty jungle beast cardio at the gym later in the afternoon... All of that, and I still feel great! For those who have expressed curiosity on what my day looks like now that it's more 'structured'. It looks something like this: Breakfast: Frui...

Thoughts on potentially OCD behaviour

Since Monday, I've been trying to re-adjust my diet to the way I was eating when I just got into raw foods last year. The months following that time were the healthiest months of my life. In a mere 6 month period, I dropped down to the goal weight I had been aiming for for who even knows how long. I was also full of energy all the time, had a more positive outlook, and slept and woke up totally refreshed and without an alarm clock (which is saying a lot for a young person, given 99% of the rest of us sleep until the early afternoon and still feel groggy). In short, that diet was much more of a "high raw" diet than what I've been following over the passed 6 months. In the early stages, I focused almost exclusively on fruits and veggies, and limited healthy fats through nuts, seeds, and avocados. The more recent stage has descended into a raw unbaking frenzy of sweeteners, coconut butter, and nuts, on top of the fruits and veggies. Not even my daily workouts could keep ...

Soup and a Very Expensive Salad

Image
I've always been the kind of person who wishes they drank more soup. I don't know why. I really love 'em, but I never get around to making them myself. Whenever I go out to eat, I am often really excited by the prospect of being able to have soup, which everyone else just finds kind of boring. I can't really have soup when I go out anymore, unless I decide to go for a cooked one (which I have done on occasion), or unless we go to a full-on raw restaurant. So I've decided to make up for it by make some myself. I've both scoured the internet for good raw soup recipes and have come up with a lot of my own concoctions. These include a spinach basil soup, a gazpacho, a pepper soup, a miso soup, a carrot ginger soup (my favourite), and now a cream of mushroom soup (which may require a little work still and was yesterday's dinner) and a cucumber dill soup (which was lunch today). While many other raw bloggers have some awesome raw soup ideas, I often find that they...

Back in the Game

It's always when one is busiest that they both have the least time to blog and the most they want to write about. Taking a blogging break to settle into our new home has not let me do justice to some of the wonderful raw foods we've been having since we got here. I'm psyched to say that Ottawa thrives with raw options! Every natural food store has a least one entire shelf dedicate to raw foodies. Our favourite vegan restaurant, the Green Door , now labels their raw dishes. And our city even has its very own raw guru, Natasha Kyssa of Simply Raw who holds awesome events including a monthly raw vegan potluck! This will be the last quick recap of my life before I get back into the food & fitness blogging game. I'm sure most of you are more interested in the latter anyway... So long story short, since we got here, I've gotten absolutely addicted to these Bio-Sphere raw burgers: Found a space in our kitchen for my new baby : Celebrated Canada Day (I love you Ca...

Home Sweet Home

Image
I'm alive! I don't know how you clever bloggers manage to keep posting while you travel and/or are really busy. I just can't keep up with everything and had to take a blogging break. Though I still have no wi-fi, I just wanted to quickly say that we have all safely (and miraculously) made it across the border safe and sound. I don't know how we managed to fit plants + people + pets + stuff in one car and make it here all in one piece. We didn't even run into too many problems with border control (luckily, our plants came from Canada originally so they were allowed to come home). The funny thing was our license plate was from no other state than... ... so we got a lot of funny looks trying to cross into Canada. Maybe the plate was causing me to drive more recklessly? Don't mess with Texas! Anyway, we got to our new home okay. I was super psyched to see how many plants there already are in the front and backyards. On top of that, we came at the perfect time of th...

I fear scarcity

Two more days to enter in my dehydrator giveaway , and thanks to all of those who already have! So despite the fact that we are officially leaving the country in less than a week, we kind of went nuts during our last trips to our two favourite local grocery stores: Roots Market and MOM's (you will both be very very missed). I think there is something very primal in a human being when it fears that it won't be able to get food... like stockpiling. We were like two weary travelers in an oasis after a long trip in the desert, grabbing at everything and anything that said "raw" on the label and putting in our grocery cart. Okay, it wasn't that bad, but we both felt this definite sense of urgency, like we didn't know when we'd be able to find these products or food ever again. The silly thing is, I've been to all the natural grocers in Ottawa and I love them all, yet I don't know if they have all the raw goodies that I'm used to buying here or if ...
