Berry Yummy Green Smoothie

Image
What better way to start the day than with a high antioxidant, alkalinizing smoothie? I don't think the taste of my smoothies ever significantly change when I put milder greens in them, but if you're not into the whole "green" smoothie thing, just add in greens little by little and stick with the ones that have less of a taste like spinach or mixed greens. If you want you can move on to the big leagues later and ones like dandelion or beet greens, collard, kale, and more. By breaking them up in the blender, adding greens to your smoothie makes them a lot easier for you to digest and absorb their nutrients. They're high in iron, calcium, magnesium, and Vitamins A, C, K and lots of the B family. And of course, greens are rich in chlorophyll. I just found out that chlorophyll is almost molecularly identical to hemoglobin, which means that by having your greens, you're actually helping your blood rebuild and clean and replenish itself. Raw foodists known th...

Gifts for Aunt Flow

I know, I know, how many times can a girl post about this? Apparently, a lot. Thing is, I keep reading so much unhealthy misinformation about women's menstrual cycles that I always feel compelled to tell women and girls more about it! When I go online and see girls ask questions like "can I eat ice cream during my period?" or "is it okay to eat chocolate?" I often just see replies as some variation of "Girrrrl, eat whatever you want! It's that time, you totally have free range!" or "I call that week my free week, so I don't feel so bad about eating junk." It concerns me that girls are more concerned with justifying bad diet during a critical time of the month over choosing to adopt a healthier lifestyle year round. If we were all more careful in the first place, maybe we wouldn't feel so bad (both emotionally and physically) when that week actually comes along! I may be about to go all "female empowerment" on you here, b...

Last Minute Dip

Image
A quick post for a quick recipe! When I came home from the airport a couple days ago, I found the fridge pretty devoid of veggies and all the stores were closed early for New Year's Eve. Luckily we had some walnuts in the cupboard, so with four veggies in hand and some nuts, I came up with this pretty tasty dip! When you're in a pinch, definitely try it out! Last Minute Dip 1 C walnuts* 1/2 red pepper 1/2 celery stick 1 1/2 dates squeeze of lemon salt to taste (I'm a salt junkieee) *ideally soaked, but I hadn't had the time 1. Mix everything in your blender, Vitamix, or food processor. 2. Serve with veggies, and enjoy!

Happy New Year!

(pic from here ) HAPPY NEW YEAR! Happy New Year to you and yours! I hope your 2011 is filled with health, love, and happiness! I've gotta say, I've never been so uncertain about what an upcoming year will hold. 2010 has been exciting and crazy in so many ways, most of them pretty unexpected. Who knows what 2011 has in store for me? To recap 2010, perhaps I should have read predictions earlier this year using the Chinese Lunar Calendar because 2010 was "my" year... I'm born in the Year of the Tiger and 2010 was also a Tiger Year (specifically a Metal Tiger year). It's been a wild ride. Given the nature of Tigers, I assumed maybe just having a Tiger live through a Tiger year was just a little too much heat, but here's what I just read about the 2010 Year of the Tiger (which ends this February 2011): "This year is one of much activity, drama, change, crisis, and unpredictability. Tiger years are associated with instability and upheaval. Metal is particu...

These seeds are awesome, savvy?

Sometimes you eat a new superfood because you think it has some property that will make you healthier, sometimes you eat a new superfood because it's the latest fad and you want to keep up with the times, but sometimes you just want eat a new superfood because it's so damn yummy! This was my experience with a random bag of Savi Seed Sacha Inchi seeds that Andrew brought home a couple nights ago. Two words for you: NEW ADDICTION. I think I could seriously sit down to a bin of these and spend the rest of my life quite content. Now, I don't usually get non-raw food cravings that seriously, but I don't know what it is in the air but I've been craving childhood comfort foods so bad recently (that being real Chinese food, not the fake take-out crap) or more generally, anything that people around here would call "ethnic" food (Indian or Middle Eastern food have been the two things constantly on my mind recently). On the Chinese food note though, I...

Anger Management Tip #1: Bake

Image
When I was in high school, if I ever asked a friend if I could come over to their place for an impromptu baking session, their first question would always be "What's wrong? Are you okay?" When I shared a place with housemates and they came home to the wonderful aroma of carrot cake or banana bread, someone would always asked "Okay, who pissed off Chantal?" In both those instances, 95% of the time they were right... I confess, I'm an emotional baker. I know I'm not the only person to think this, but baking has always been my primary method of coping with anger, sadness, frustration, stress, or some combination of those four emotions. I don't know when that habit started... it was probably when my babysitter Evelyn taught me to bake banana bread from scratch for the first time when I was about 13. Ever since that day, whenever I was pissed, whenever I'd gone through some tragic teenage heartbreak, or when I'd just had a bad day, I woul...
