5 Awesome Foods of the Week

Image
Here are a few of the raw and/or delicious things I have consumed and made this week to keep you inspired in your own health journeys: 1) Can't... Stop... Eating... Collard Wraps (image source) They're so good I always end up eating them before I remember to take a picture. I've usually been filling mine with carrot, beets, tomato, cucumber, sprouts, and my sun-dried tomato/sunflower seed/almond "meat" (a variation of this old recipe). In fact, I may go make some more when I'm done writing this. I mentioned a little while back that one of my goals this winter was stay way more raw than I did last year. I know that a big part of that is finding the foods that make me feel raw and nourished when it starts to go below zero. Last year, I got too lazy to try, got cold, and just had whatever would take that feeling away (among other excuses, I tell myself that it was also my first winter in Ottawa, so I was adapting...). I know that a lot of people say...

Living with a Foodie

Image
It has now gone far past the point of confession: everyone knows I am a foodie. But more often than not, I wonder what it must be like to live with someone like me, in other words, what it must be like to live with a foodie. I'm currently in the middle of reading " The Gastronomy of Marriage " by Michelle Maisto and it's a really great read. And yes, I am reading another foodie book, but I have good reason to do so! You see, when you're tired of bothering your friends, your roommates, your spouse, your family, and sometimes even the guy selling apples at his market stand with talk of food, you can simply pick up a foodie book, curl up on the couch, and feel like you aren't that crazy, that someone out there in the world relates to you. (This is also why I like to wind down at night by reading other people's food blogs). It's a kind of strange foodie escapism. I can related to Michelle Maisto in so many ways, especially with her increased o...

I am Home, and making friends with sea life

As I briefly mentioned last night, my first use of Irish Moss has proven an absolute success! To inaugurate my Irish Moss experience and to use up apples I bought on specials at the health food store, I settled on I am Grateful 's I am Home Apple Pie. (For more nutritional info on Irish Moss, check out an earlier post here .) I have to admit I was kind of scared of Irish Moss at first. How I was supposed to turn a translucent tree branch-looking plant into a yummy part of my pie? I had no idea! I started by very religiously following the instructions laid out by the recipe. I soaked the Irish Moss in water for about 24 hours, and it looked... exactly the same as when I put it in there. Hrm. But it sure does look funny: All I needed was an aquarium and some tropical fish... The recipe was a little more labor intensive than most of the other raw apple pies I've made, but it was definitely worth it because it brilliantly simulated the ooey-gooeyness of cooked apple pie. To make t...

Corn, Glorious, Corn

Image
As I mentioned recently, I will most likely be bingeing on corn and watermelon for the next 4 months until they go out of season again. At that point, my love for the two of them will be a long-distance one, and my passions will have to hibernate until it's summer again. While I can eat some fruits and veggies out of season, I find it strange that I can't bring myself to eat either watermelons or corn when it's not summer (I tend to have a hard time eating out-of-season strawberries too, in fact, I get a little fanatical about that one... just ask Andrew... it's not pretty). So to make the most out of the 10 organic ears of corn we bought over the weekend at MOM' s, I made Ani Phyo 's Red Pepper Corn Salsa, after trying out Alissa Cohen 's Corn Tortillas a couple days ago . It was fresh and delicious, though I feel like it should have had lime in it or something. There's just something about corn and tomatoes that's juuuust right! I also unfortunatel...
