Pre-pregnant? It's Never too Early to Start Being Healthy

Image
It's a statement you hear a lot from women: "Now that I am/trying to get pregnant, what kind of vitamins should I take for the baby to be healthy? What about folic acid?" As you know, I'm not currently in the baby market, but I still think it's important for women to know that health is not something that should come at the same time as the stork. Many neural tube defects are said to occur even before most women know they are pregnant. Being optimally healthy and getting all your vitamins and nutrients, whether for yourself, your potential future little you or both, is something that should be maintained over a lifetime. I've always had the highest respect for Kristen Suzanne and her hubby, who preemptively took a whole year before even trying to conceive, to get in the best shape and make 100% sure they were getting all the vitamins and minerals they needed to produce the healthiest child they could. Yes, they'd been healthy even before that, but when t...

Luna Pads: Yes, your period CAN be fun

Image
(if you don't care to read my post, I won't resent you... just scroll down to the end of the post for a Luna Pad 15% off discount code! And please share it with friends and family!) If you're a girl over the age of 12 (or however young girls are getting their periods these days) I know you must be having an impossibly hard time believing my title, but seriously, it's true! For a few years now, I've been on the hunt for the most environmentally friendly, comfortable, and healthy way to experience my menses, and have I ever found it! To give you a little bit of history on my hunt, after I moved away from those nasty plasticized pads you always get taught to use in the beginning, I moved one notch up the environmental scale by using O.B. tampons because they didn't have unnecessary applicators. When I realized how bad non-organic cotton is for the environment (and that's not even considering the toxins being leaked into my body through my very precious uterin...

Just Don't Do It: The Birth Control Pill

Image
So, I'm going to go out on a limb here and pick another fairly controversial topic to discuss on a monday morning: the birth control pill. I feel like every girl and her mother are on the pill nowadays. Why? Because it's an expedient method to avoid pregnancy, and doctors claims it can solve everything from bad acne to irregular menstrual cycles. Pregnancy aside, why are we not addressing the actual causes of things like acne or menstrual pain rather than just the symptoms? Unnecessary pains or breakouts are generally your body trying to tell you something is up. Why don't doctors ask us to try something like change our diet, try an herbal remedies, or adopt healthier lifestyle? These would actually address the causes than the symptoms. Instead, we are given a contraceptive? Am I the only one who thinks this is abnormal? As girls we are now taught that birth control pills are a safe and reliable way to avoid pregnancy. This couldn't be further from the truth. Birth cont...

Gifts for Aunt Flow

Image
I know, I know, how many times can a girl post about this? Apparently, a lot. Thing is, I keep reading so much unhealthy misinformation about women's menstrual cycles that I always feel compelled to tell women and girls more about it! When I go online and see girls ask questions like "can I eat ice cream during my period?" or "is it okay to eat chocolate?" I often just see replies as some variation of "Girrrrl, eat whatever you want! It's that time, you totally have free range!" or "I call that week my free week, so I don't feel so bad about eating junk." It concerns me that girls are more concerned with justifying bad diet during a critical time of the month over choosing to adopt a healthier lifestyle year round. If we were all more careful in the first place, maybe we wouldn't feel so bad (both emotionally and physically) when that week actually comes along! I may be about to go all "female empowerment" on you here, b...

The Lady Lowdown

Image
Is it super appropriate that it's the Chinese Moon Festival and I'm talking about Moon Cycles? So first off, happy Zhong Qiu Jie to any or all who are celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival! Anyhoo, I have a plan: thirty-some years from now I plan on bragging just as much about how easy going through menopause is, as I am bragging right now about how I breeze my way through my monthly cycle. While you may so not want to be hearing about this, I feel that I do have bragging rights. Like the people with the amazing before and after weight loss photos, I'd like to have pictures of how I used to feel around this time of the month. The before picture would be me all but dying on a couch, and the after shots would be me breezing through a Power Yoga class (which I did), or riding a horse (which I have in the past), or climbing Mount Everest (which I plan on doing)... Needless to say, I feel great! Like I've mentioned before , a number of factors have contributed to my female h...

PMS = Please Make Soup

Image
I've mentioned before that as a thirteen year old, I was one of those girls who dreaded 'that time of the month' because to me that meant a couple days of writhing in pain, barely able to stand, hating every minute of it, and wondering 'why why why wasn't I born a boy' (okay, the last one is a total lie). But ever since I start going to the chiropractor, and then adopting vegan and now a raw diet, those symptoms have gone *poof*... really, sometimes I even forget it's even that time when I'm in the middle of it! It's been life changing. Nevertheless, I still feel some side-effects of the whole moon cycle process usually meaning I have this desire to stay at home and nest... aka. spend more time in the kitchen. However, I also usually totally lose my appetite and revert to just wanting liquids. I understand though, that's it's particularly important right now to get lots of iron, to get my B12, and to keep eating despite how full I alw...
