Friday Confessional

"Hi my name is Chantal, and I have 'sticking-to-fasts' aversion..." "Hi Chantal." As a lead up to my post, here are my two shout-outs of the day: I have to say that Heather (and her blog, Adventures of Raw Goddess Heathy ) has definitely been one of the biggest inspirations in my choice to go raw (the other one being Meredith Frantz and her awesome blog, the Raw Seed ). In short, both of these women pretty much exemplified what I was looking for when I first wanted to turn to raw foods: emotional and physical health, fitness, happiness, all resulting in inner and outer beauty. Seeing them, I thought, hey, if they can do it and seem so wonderful, than I can too! After reading Heather's post today, I decided that I too have a confession to make: I've always been really enamored by the concept of fasting. Since my childhood, I had always conveniently been able to take the period of Lent very seriously, a seriousness those around me just saw as some kind...

My Ginger Love Affair: The Ice Cream Episode

Image
As you might have noticed in one of my earliest recipe posts for my Ginger Three Ways Cookies , my undying love for ginger is quite profound. I stick ginger in everything from my green smoothies, my salads through a ginger-almond-miso dressing, to my cookies, and now I give to you on my favourites: raw Ginger Ice Cream! It's a really no-nonsense recipe that requires little more than 'stick everything in blender and turn the on button'. I made it again today because I thought the flavor would go beautifully with the fruitcake I mentioned I made off of Raw Goddess Heathy's blog yesterday... and I was right! Here's what you'll need: Raw Ginger Ice Cream 2 C cashews, soaked overnight 1 C filtered water 1 tbsp non-acoholic vanilla (or 1 whole vanilla bean) 2/3 C maple syrup or agave nectar (you can tweak this a bit for sweetness) 1 tsp salt 1 inch piece of ginger (diced) 1/2-3/4 C crystallized ginger (I kept half of it and diced it to add back into the ice cr...

My Fruitcake Excuse

We spent all day at my parents' place today so I'm a little behind in my interesting blogging ideas. On the way there, we did get to head out for more yummy grocery goodness from MOM's , still the best grocery store in the world. Speaking of moms, mine makes the most amazing veggie stew (just veggies and water in a dutch oven) which we had for dinner alongside a wonderfully huge salad. Because I always weekly bake for my dad, who now only eats my vegan baked goods due to health reasons, I also had the chance to whip up a new marbled brownie-blondie cake thing for him which turned out wonderfully (obviously not raw, but man did it look good!). We also got to watch today's Iron Chef , which featured Cristeta Comeford , the White House Chef, and whose challenge was to feature produce from the Obamas' White House Garden. Though most dishes were way too deep fried and covered in some form or meat and/or lard for my taste, both teams' creativity and end platage was re...
