I fear scarcity

Image
Two more days to enter in my dehydrator giveaway , and thanks to all of those who already have! So despite the fact that we are officially leaving the country in less than a week, we kind of went nuts during our last trips to our two favourite local grocery stores: Roots Market and MOM's (you will both be very very missed). I think there is something very primal in a human being when it fears that it won't be able to get food... like stockpiling. We were like two weary travelers in an oasis after a long trip in the desert, grabbing at everything and anything that said "raw" on the label and putting in our grocery cart. Okay, it wasn't that bad, but we both felt this definite sense of urgency, like we didn't know when we'd be able to find these products or food ever again. The silly thing is, I've been to all the natural grocers in Ottawa and I love them all, yet I don't know if they have all the raw goodies that I'm used to buying here or if ...

My Apple Pie is Your Apple Pie

Image
After another day of grocery shopping madness out in the 'burbs (who knew it was so difficult to find bulk unsulphured organic apricots!), I went on another mad cooking spree this evening. We had another very successful dinner for which I perfected yet another one of Alissa Cohen's recipes: her Mock Salmon Pate, which was quite a pretty color and was really tasty (I have leftovers which I plan on running a fun test on tomorrow). I served them up with some fresh cut veggies and a brand of local-ish raw chips we found at MOM's today. To make up little lettuce boats/wraps, I also added romaine lettuce leaves and sprouts to the plate post-photography. As a side note, the chips were divine , they even had the salty baked corn after taste that you get when you eat tortillas chips. They are from Brad's Raw Chips (we picked the red pepper kind), that you can apparently only get a hold of in PA and MD for now. Prompted by Andrew's "so, what's for desert?" as s...

The ultimate superfood

Image
If I were stuck on a deserted island and could only bring one superfood what would it be? Spirulina for sure! (Though that might seem a dumb idea since there would probably be seaweed all around my deserted island...) Mesquite would probably be my second. But spirulina, the world's tastiest blue-green algae, is truly an amazing product! By being a superfood, it obviously contains all your essential amino acids, as well as every other non-essential amino acid, phytonutrient, minerals, and vitamin you could ever think of (and many that you probably didn't even know existed... for more detail, you can find the info here ). So yep, that includes the elusive B12, so feared and honored by vegans and raw foodists. Spirulina's breakdown is about 55- 77% protein, about 20% carb, 5% healthy fat, and is super rich in minerals, and fiber! Who could ask for more? If all of that wasn't enough, spirulina helps support the immune system, cardiovascular health, is a powerful an...

Call National Security, it's... SNOW!

Image
Coming from having lived in Canada for four years, I find it very silly to see the whole area go up in a mad panic the minute snow is being announced on the forecast. Today was one such day. Okay, there is suppose to be between 1-2 feet of snow fall tomorrow beginning in the afternoon, but this desperate fear that our lifestyles might temporarily be put on hold is outstanding. The panic around 'I might not be able to get my latte today', or 'what if I can't watch TV this weekend' just shows how unplugged we've become from nature, each other, and just knowing how to live without outside inputs. I'm helping run a conference through my program this weekend (bad timing, I know!) and had to do a Costco run to pick up some items for coffee breaks and breakfast, and was amazed when I got to the place bright and early to find it already jam-packed with people on a week day. It only took me a few seconds before I realized... oh no, it's the usual DC-area armaged...

My Fruitcake Excuse

Image
We spent all day at my parents' place today so I'm a little behind in my interesting blogging ideas. On the way there, we did get to head out for more yummy grocery goodness from MOM's , still the best grocery store in the world. Speaking of moms, mine makes the most amazing veggie stew (just veggies and water in a dutch oven) which we had for dinner alongside a wonderfully huge salad. Because I always weekly bake for my dad, who now only eats my vegan baked goods due to health reasons, I also had the chance to whip up a new marbled brownie-blondie cake thing for him which turned out wonderfully (obviously not raw, but man did it look good!). We also got to watch today's Iron Chef , which featured Cristeta Comeford , the White House Chef, and whose challenge was to feature produce from the Obamas' White House Garden. Though most dishes were way too deep fried and covered in some form or meat and/or lard for my taste, both teams' creativity and end platage was re...

Sexy Fruit?

Image
Who says raw food ever gets boring? At our m ost recent trip to Mo m's (still the BEST grocery store ever), Andrew and I fell upon one of the strangest fruits we've ever seen. Of course as is his lovable habit, Andrew had to buy it for novelty's sake. Once we took it home, it became something of our pet for the next few days. What was it y ou ask? It was a Monstera Deliciosa aka. the 'Delicious Monster'. Hailing from Glaser Farms in South Florida (not so local, I know...), our little monster is actually a native fruit of Mexico and Guatemala. He's a tropical fruit grown on a very large  leafed philodendron, and likes hot and humid areas. Okay, I know fruits don't have a sex, but really, just look at it. I'll call him a 'he' if I want to. Like most of my raw diet now, I couldn't eat this lovely fruit immediately but had to wait for something to happen to him. Usually, I have to wait a couple days because of dehydrating, s...

"Ginger Three-Ways" Cookies

Image
So, I recently decided that Liz Lovely ’s Ginger Snapdragons cookies are the best thing that ever happened to cookies! In fact, Liz Lovely is the best thing that ever happened to cookies. Because I only have access to them when I got to MOM’s near my parents’ place, I decided to try to make my own version to lessen the craving til I can get out there. I think I did a pretty good job! And they’re extra gingery because that’s the only way to go! I made mine in different sizes to get the small flat crispy ones and the bigger chewy ones. And as always, use organic ingredients! Ingredients 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour 1 teaspoon baking soda
 1/2 teaspoon salt
 4 teaspoons ground ginger
 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
 1/2 cup canola oil
 1/4 cup molasses
 1/4 cup soy milk
 3/4 cup cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanillafreshly grated ginger (to taste) chopped pieces of crystallized ginger to put on top 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Ex...
