Eat: A Week in Raw Food Dinners

Image
Every once in a while I'll have someone ask me what raw foodies eat on a daily basis without making their lives super complicated. By "super complicated," I mean, when you don't have to dehydrate, prep-prep, sprout, and do all the usual things that might make a lot of raw dishes pretty time consuming. Here's almost a week's worth of dinners I made that all took less than 20 minutes to prep. And they were all deeeelicious and is generally what I make when I want to keep it relatively simple. Of course, it's usually paired with some fancier things like raw crackers and such. (I'll make large batches of those types of things over the weekend when I have more time.) I would give you the recipes... but as usual, these recipes are ideas that caught my fancy when I got to the kitchen counter to make dinner, and they were not written down because they're based off of intuition and whatever my little hands could find in the pantry and fridge. I can...

Eat: Best Meal Ever, Kelp Noodle Bowl

Image
As Fall comes along and the weather gets colder, I tend to follow the "raw until dinner" rule pretty often. When I go for that option, the day is made up of fruit, green smoothies, and a few dehydrated goodies, and dinners tend to be any kind simple cooked veggies with the occasional tempeh. I've mentioned before that I tend to get a little bit obsessed with certain foods and eat them every day for a month until I move on to something new. This month, I figured why limit myself? So I took all of my favourite meals from over the past few months and put them into one. The result was this amazing  kelp noodle bowl that I created a couple days ago. It pieces together all my favourite cooked and raw foods all into one giant bowl of yummy. On top of a flavour and texture extravaganza, it's nutrition-packed, warming, and can be made in under 20 minutes. Pure deliciousness. Given its components, I'm also sure it contains all the minerals, vitamins, healthy fats, prot...

EAT: WIAW Same old, same old...

Image
Time for another What I Ate Wednesday post! I've only done one other before... The problem with any WIAW post of mine is that they'd all probably end up looking pretty much the same, changing up maybe only every season... conveniently, my constance means when I forget to take pictures, I can just recycle some old ones. Breakfast: My favourite Green Smoothie (note the obvious photo recycling thanks to the dead giveaway of the Christmas table runner) At this point, I've probably had this smoothie over 500 times in my life considering it's been my go-to breakfast for a few years now. I would do something different, but I don't, because it's just so yummy. Mid-Day Snack: Raw   Granola Crunchies These crunchies have also become my replacement cereal option since I went raw. I now cut the liquid sweetener all together from the recipe and just used pureed dates (dates and little bit of water to make it mixable). The batch I had today were the same ...

Raw Chocolate Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream

Image
This Monday, I say yay for starting out the week with a raw version of a classic indulgence! Who says you have to wait 'til Sunday for treats... Chocolate Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream Yield: About 4 servings 3 C cashews, soaked overnight 3/4 C maple syrup 1 1/4 C water 1 vanilla bean (or 1.5 T vanilla extact) 1/2 C frozen cherries, halved (or dried cherries*) 1/3 C chocolate chips (or more!) 1/2 teaspoon of salt *I used dried cherries this time, but this recipe is one million times better with the frozen ones! 1. Blend all the ingredients, except chocolate chips and dried cherries, in a Vitamix or similar high-powered blender. 2. Place in ice cream maker, and follow the maker's instructions. About half way through, add in cherries and chocolate chips. 3. Serve with your favourite raw chocolate sauce, cookie, etc.

Raw "Calamari"

First off, Happy New Year to you all!  Hope your year has started off with health, happiness, and light! To those of you who make resolutions/goals, may you fulfill all those intentions! To those of you who don't, have an awesome guilt-free year! I can't believe it's been a whole month since I've written, and before you know it, I'm back in classes again tomorrow. This holiday season was wonderful, stressful, relaxing, healing, and so many things at the same time I don't even know where to start... I know I've always kind of written a resolution post around this time, but my goals and intentions this year are pretty intense, so I think I might actually hold off for now and go straight to the funner goods. One of my mini-resolutions for the year is to continue on my raw food journey without having to completely ignore the fact that I do love baking and making vegan foods. I know that to be happy I want to do both. The catch is to feed the non-...

5 Amazing Potluck Dishes

Image
This was meant to come up last night, but to start off your week, here are some yummy food pictures from Andrew's birthday party this weekend. Hopefully, it will inspire you on what to bring to your next vegan potluck! 1) Harvest Rice Stuffed Acorn Squash Made by our lovely friend, Kadri, these babies were stuffed with cranberries, nuts, wild rice, apricots, and all sorts of other indescribable harvest-y yummies. They were as tasty as they were gorgeous! 2) Polenta and Ratatouille So I've been wanting to try polenta for ages now, but have never really had the opportunity. 'Lo and behold, but the wonderful Angela comes over with polenta covered in all my all time favourite... ratatouille! Now there's a winner! As for my first taste of polenta? Everyone always told me polenta is bland, and I suppose that the taste is kind of understated, but there's something about the texture that is way too fun! 3) Vegan Chili, Roasted Squash, & Soup Fixin's...

5 Awesome Foods of the Week

Image
Here are a few of the raw and/or delicious things I have consumed and made this week to keep you inspired in your own health journeys: 1) Can't... Stop... Eating... Collard Wraps (image source) They're so good I always end up eating them before I remember to take a picture. I've usually been filling mine with carrot, beets, tomato, cucumber, sprouts, and my sun-dried tomato/sunflower seed/almond "meat" (a variation of this old recipe). In fact, I may go make some more when I'm done writing this. I mentioned a little while back that one of my goals this winter was stay way more raw than I did last year. I know that a big part of that is finding the foods that make me feel raw and nourished when it starts to go below zero. Last year, I got too lazy to try, got cold, and just had whatever would take that feeling away (among other excuses, I tell myself that it was also my first winter in Ottawa, so I was adapting...). I know that a lot of people say...

5 Awesome Weekday Happenings

Image
1)  Making my own Version of this  Raw Chocolate Orange Cheesecake Gorgeous, isn't it? I did get to taste it, but it was for my catering gig. I changed the crust from the original recipe. I also tweaked the proportions of the filling and omitted the orange extract because I was out. It's the perfect for the Fall! 2) Pairing an Awesome Chocolate Orange Cheesecake with a Raw Pumpkin Cheesecake This is one of my own making. The crust was pecan, walnuts, and dates. The filling was pumpkin, lemon juice, soaked cashews, agave, vanilla, pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, ginger, cloves, mace, allspice), and sea salt. 3) Receiving a Stash of Sunwarrior Goods in the Mail So over a month ago, I won a giveaway from the lovely Ayah over at  Healthy Tasty Cheap . When I won, it totally made my day since that was around the time my laptop had gotten stolen. However, the package must have had quite the journey to get to me. I'd been in and of town, there was a mail strike ...

How to Have an Epic Birthday

Image
How to have an epic birthday, tip #1: Have awesome friends. There are little things in life that you just don't realize how much you appreciate 'til you take a step back and realize how awesome everything you have is. That was how yesterday went for me, which also happened to be my birthday. It was everything I wanted nothing fancy, nothing crazy, and yet nothing boring or simple. After a year of crazy and self-inflicted ups and major downs, it was, in all respects, perfect. Friends, food, spontaneous music, laughter, happiness, all coming together under our roof. What more could you want, really? I also can't say how grateful I am that everyone went out of their way to make beautiful and tasty dishes that fit within my vegan ethic. It was even an added bonus and awesome coincidence that everyone unknowingly ended up bringing a dish that completely randomly either had a) one of my favourite ingredients of all time b) something I've been jonesing for recently ...

Raw on the Road: London and Toronto, take 2

Image
Whether you're from there or just visiting, everyone knows that London is a pretty conservative town. Generally, conservative town = not super vegan friendly. Every time we go there, I tend to kind of forget about that, probably out of some sort of denial. However, if you know where to look, there are a fair number of organic and veg-friendly options. Especially if you choose to go the DIY route, their health food stores stock some very decent options: downtown London hosts the London Food Co-op , Wortley Village's Quarter Master Natural Foods , and the East End has Lyn-Dys (they are a bit pricier). Even more exciting, we discovered Organic Works ' new location, a mostly vegan and gluten-free bakery and cafe for all your yummy bread/baked good needs. We even got to meet the owner, Peter, who took us on a quick tour of the bakery! A foodie's dream come true! (If you're not in London, you can still find their stuff in most cities in the province and I would defini...

What I Ate Wednesdays

Image
So half way through my morning, I was hit with a "It's Wednesday already! #*%*#@!!!!" mostly because once again, I really wanted to participate in my first What I Ate Wednesday . Even though I'd already had two meals, I didn't let that put me down, and made the best of what I had... So finally, here I am! WiaW is more than just about posting the random things you eat during your day. Started by Peas & Crayons, the goal is for the blogging community to ultimately share in the one thing we obviously all have in common despite dietary choices, lifestyles, blog topics, etc: FOOD! It's fun, it's an easy to connect with each other, inspire others, embrace our food, and have yet another excuse to look at some food porn... After my morning cardio, I was RAVENOUS, and tried my best to slowly sip (and chew!) my breakfast and while I managed, I didn't get a photo. Instead, this was breakfast, except imagine that blended with added spinach and spiru...

Raw ABCs

Image
First off, here's your daily dose of beautiful: Secondly, I was all excited about doing my first "What I Ate Wednesday" post since I love seeing other bloggers doing those. However, after taking pictures of breakfast, I kind of completely forgot about it for the rest of the day... bad blogger, bad. So thirdly, yay filler post! Back in March, I succumbed to my first internet meme by filling out the ABCs survey that was going around blog world. I then remembered how much I used to love those little chain letter survey things when I was a tween. When I saw that Bitt had created her own raw version of that survey, I knew she had me wrapped around her little finger! I can also use these as an excuse to say that I'm being more superficially "personal" with all of you. Please feel free to fill it out if you're a closet survey filler too! A - Preferred Way of Eating Avocados: I used to love them most in smoothies and things, but now probably...
