To any of you who might know that French tune, I actually think one of my favourite holidays of the year is the Epiphany (I explained the concept a couple years back ). Mostly, that's because it's when you serve my favourite dessert for dinner: la Galette des Rois. La Galette is a delicious pastry filled with an almond paste, in which you hide a "f è ve"(which literally means bean, but has long since been traditionally replaced by a porcelain figurine of the Virgin Mary.) The one who gets the piece with the f è ve in it, is declared King (or Queen) for the evening, and gets to wear a silly crown. I've been celebrating this holiday with my family since I was a kid, so one of my inner French housewife fantasies has always been to have my own household to which I could invite friends over for dinner to eat galette. One of my favourite holidays to start off the new year with is the Epiphany , for my family it's the Catholic holiday celebrating when the Magi arrived to Bethlehem to see the Christ (frankincense, myrrh, and gold included), or (if I understand it correctly) the day that the eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate their Christmas. Aside from adding the Magi to our family's Nativity scene, the biggest tradition that I've only ever still seen celebrated in Europe is gathering up the family to eat the Galette des Rois (or 'King's Cake', though it's more of a puff pastry). A galette is a to die for frangipane pastry that contains a f è ve (literally a 'bean' but now usually a porcelain miniature). Tradition goes that the youngest person in the family sits under the table when the galette is brought out, and the family's patriarch cuts the galette into as many pieces as there are people present.
