Happy Thanksgiving & 5 Seasonal Foods I'm Grateful For

Image
Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends, family, and readers! May your day be filled with gratitude and yummy delicious food.  We had our first snow here in Ottawa yesterday, and while everyone started to complain, I'm still choosing to get excited by how magical the first snow fall looks! So to go along with the whole theme of the day, here are 5 foods that I get really excited about during this time of the year and that I'm grateful Mother Nature decided to give to us: 1) Persimmons So, I know a lot of people who didn't grow up eating persimmons find them gooey and weird, but there's something about their strange texture that I just can't get enough of. I can't say I know much about other types of persimmon, but hachiyas steal my heart away every winter. Their awesome colouring shows that they are high in anti-oxidants like vitamin A, B, and C, beta-carotene, and lycopene, amongst others. They also contain a carotenoid, called zeaxanthin, w...

Can I really chase the turkey?

Like most raw foodists, I've grown a little wary of family get-togethers because of my diet. They have ranged from going perfectly fine (I love you mom!), to the offensive (the French genes in my family just don't understand anything but their own superior culinary ways and feel very threatened by the very notion of anything outside of the norm), to the plain confused ("so why exactly do you put yourself through this?"). I know for a fact that there will be an abundance of salads and fruits for me to eat, and I'll also be bringing a raw vegan chocolate pecan pie. Apparently, Tofurky will even be making an appearance at this year's Thanksgiving (something I used to love, but now probably w...

So, the universe is an amazing thing. When you are open to what it has to give, you receive the most incredible opportunities and meet the most amazing people. That's what has kept me away from blogging since the end of classes. It's actually been scary how perfectly different pieces of my life has been fitting together recently. Things that made no sense have all of sudden coincided perfectly, people I never thought existed have suddenly manifested themselves in my life. Today's shout out goes to the Universe: Thank you for remembering me! Anyway, I figured it was time I went back to good ol' me and posted a recipe. This creation was actually inspired by a talk on the All You Can Eat podcast hosted by Don Genova . Ever since I decided to catch up with the 21st Century and figure out what Podcasts actually are, I've been addicted! And as a result I now have over 500 food podcasts on my Ipod. All You Can Eat is really audio foodie heaven! One of Don Genova's o...
