Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Overnight Oats

Image
There have been a lot of delicious looking cookie dough-flavoured Overnight Oats over the last little while (like this one or this one) that were just too tempting to not try. I don't eat oats myself, but you know you're a foodie when you still want to try a recipe for something you don't necessarily partake in. Conveniently, Andrew loves them! Looking through some existing recipes, I was wondering how it was possible that so few ingredients would turn into something cookie dough tasting, but they were pretty on the ball! I used them as an inspiration and here's what I came up with. Who says you can't have cookies for breakfast? Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Overnight Oats Yields: 1 man-sized portion For oats: 3/4 C rolled oats 2 tablespoons of chia pinch of salt 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract (optional) 1/2 tablespoon of raw honey/maple syrup (or other liquid sweetener) 1 C non-dairy milk (almond, soy, it...

Happy Valentine's Day & Pear Smoothie Recipe

Happy Valentine's Day! Whether you're celebrating the single life or spending some quality time with your other half, hope you have a beautiful day :) While we try to hold to the whole "show your love to each other every day" credo, it's still nice to be more formal about it every once in a while and indulge in the whole wooing/date thing. I'm totally going to show off here, and tell you that the Valentine's Day wooing began on Thursday, when these were delivered especially for me during my class: I know, right? Talk about planning! ♥ you so much. Secondly, by pure coincidence, I received the Ottawa vegetarian/vegan association's (the NCVA ) newsletter this week. I have to admit I rarely read it, but this time I did, and was psyched to find out that the NCVA has just helped a local Italian restaurant, Trella , veganize a lot of their menu items for people just like us (those would be the green dots on the menu). Not being able to eat Italian (and by ...

Rainbow Smoothies

I don't think there will ever truly come a time in my life when I've had too many smoothies. They're not just convenient, but can be so versatile, and can easily boost you with all sorts of energy to start, continue, or end your day. Yesterday, we went out for brunch at one of our favourite Ottawa haunts, Cafe My House (reviewed here ). Among other things,we had a plethora of amazing smoothies. Their choices are as colourful as they are endless. To the seven of us, I think we ordered about 2/3 of their options, and they were all divine. From their mango-lime-cilantro, which is now something I make at home daily, to their raw cacao latte, there's definitely something for everyone. I opted for their Green Protein Plus, a wonderful combination of vegan proteins (pea, alfafa, hemp and brown rice), bananas, and cinnamon. Sunday brunch inspired me to expand my usual morning smoothie repertoire, and it was super successful. In the mood for something a little more tropical tha...

Breakfast makes all the differences

Again, keep up the entries to my dehydrator giveaway , only 3 more days left (Sunday night at 11:59 all bets are off!) Everyone has their eating ups and downs, but on a raw diet it seems that most the time the options are up, higher, or highest. Today was our big packing day which included lots of furniture, 53 boxes, and our kitty and plants still in tow... sounds tiring right? Well after the power breakfast we had, I've gotta say I've never felt better! To prepare for our big day, I listened to an intuition I had yesterday to make something with chia. I always listen to these types of "cravings" because I believe it's often your body telling you that you might be missing a key nutrient found in the food you are craving (obviously this only works on a raw diet, I doubt a craving for Doritos is really anything to get worked up about). So I made Meredith 's Blueberry Chia Pudding and added mesquite and maca powder to the mix. I know it seems a simple thing to ...

What just a few days out in nature can do to revive a person is truly wonderful. Three days of camping was exactly what I needed to get back into the final swing of things. One more paper to go, three more days to do it... While it seems a challenge to do after being so relaxed and reconnected to more important things in life than school and grades, my brain is ready for the challenge. It was so wonderful to do nothing but get back in touch with myself, greenery, and people. Spending your nights around a campfire drumming and dancing is more therapeutic to me than a lot of life's activities... The funny thing I noticed is that I find that when I'm away from home (and more specifically, my kitchen), I don't define myself as obsessively by food as I do when I am home. I can think about other things, I can be someone else, and my thoughts become more diverse. It seems strange but it's true. Sometimes I ask Andrew if I drive him insane when I realize that 90% of m...

Earth Day Power Breakfast

Image
What?! A non-smoothie breakfast?! Yes, I do recognize the importance of a good hearty breakfast every once in a while... okay, you caught my bluff. I have smoothies every day. I actually make these for Andrew on the days I have my weird spirulina banana whips (those are kind of smoothie like). Also to clarify, some of you have wondered if Andrew ever cooks (or uncooks), and why I'm always the one making all the food. First off, yes he can. He makes the meanest jambalaya you've ever had, is the pancake master of his (and now my) family, is (or was) a vegan cheesecake master, wooed me with the most amazing breakfast in bed in the early days of our relationship, and that's only the beginning. To tell you the truth, I'm kind of a kitchen hog. If I had been born in the 1950s, I think I could have been very content as a happy housewife. There's something I find absolutely fulfilling about feeding my man, and keeping him happy through food. I love winning people over by p...
