Eat Dance Live Man Edition: Limiting Our Noms Noms

Image
I know it's been a while since a " Man Wednesday " but here are some thoughts on the past week written by my other half: As Chantal has already posted, we went on a week long camping trip last week. We decided to take the opportunity of being away camping to go on a all-fruit diet followed by a one day fast and Chantal has graciously allowed me the opportunity to talk about my experiences with it. Understand that I originally came from the bodybuilder's world of 3000-calorie meat-protein laden diets. The thought of calorie reduction and fasting for even a day and maintaining one's health was beyond that old me's ability to understand. Being away from our own kitchen and all the foods we were avoiding made it much easier to plan out and stick to our regime, Don't get me wrong this wasn't about will-power. Once Chantal or I have made a decision we've never had a problem sticking to it, no matter how seductively the cookies in the cupboard are whispe...

Fasting on a Raw Diet

Image
First off, the big heads-up on my blog is for you to look out for my first essential raw food equipment giveaway coming up next Monday!!! It's going to be a good one :) Day 1 of the Green Smoothie Queen's 10 day Challenge was a fast until dinner. The beautiful thing about being on a raw diet is that fasts really aren't a big deal anymore. Yes, I don't do them often, but when I choose to, I don't really get hungry and it's perfectly painless. I've seen people go through 1 day of fasting and act like it's the most torturous thing they ever have to do, they feel hungry, they get headaches, they can't be very physically active, etc. On a raw diet, I got up this morning, walked around the shops of Georgetown for a couple hours, went for a double weights workout to make up for this weekend, and walked 2 mile home. The result? I feel great! I'm not trying to drum myself up here, but the lifestyle choice I have made. It's really quite fantastic. Ac...

Thoughts on Ash Wednesday

Image
Ever since I've been a kid, I've always fasted to some degree on Ash Wednesday and this year was no different. I have been giving a lot of thought about why I do this or why people fast in general (for religious or spiritual reasons anyway) because I've had increasingly mixed thoughts about why I do this. Am I just doing this to feel like I'm a bigger person? Is this just making ego feel self-important by making myself suffer for a day and feel really good that I could get through it? I don't think so... I've come to the conclusion that it can also serve a much greater purpose than merely feeding your ego (haha, feeding your ego, by not feeding your body...). What was bothering me was that I do recognize that I'm extremely privileged (as many if not most of us who have time to spend reading or writing blogs are) and that not eating for 24 hours is not going to make me understand what it's like to be starving or disenfranchised or needy. However, I thin...

Friday Confessional

Image
"Hi my name is Chantal, and I have 'sticking-to-fasts' aversion..." "Hi Chantal." As a lead up to my post, here are my two shout-outs of the day: I have to say that Heather (and her blog, Adventures of Raw Goddess Heathy ) has definitely been one of the biggest inspirations in my choice to go raw (the other one being Meredith Frantz and her awesome blog, the Raw Seed ). In short, both of these women pretty much exemplified what I was looking for when I first wanted to turn to raw foods: emotional and physical health, fitness, happiness, all resulting in inner and outer beauty. Seeing them, I thought, hey, if they can do it and seem so wonderful, than I can too! After reading Heather's post today, I decided that I too have a confession to make: I've always been really enamored by the concept of fasting. Since my childhood, I had always conveniently been able to take the period of Lent very seriously, a seriousness those around me just saw as some kind...
