Epic Raw Middle Eastern Plate

Image
Given that I've posted about falafels more than once on this blog, whether they're raw or they're cooked , you might be able to safely say that I kinda sorta like them a lot... That, and I recently admitted to my secret falafel digestion pocket located somewhere in the deep confines of my stomach. Because I've been juicing and doing green smoothies so much over the past week, my dinner-for-my-other-half creativity has been somewhat limited and perhaps less than enthusiastic, even though I love being in the kitchen (and aside from the killer vegan shepherd's pie I invented for him earlier last week, if I do say so myself). A couple days ago, I decided to go big or go home, and create for him: the epic raw Middle Eastern plate. It started off with the classic centrepiece: Matt Amsden 's Raw Falafels wrapped in romaine lettuce, and surrounded it with my raw hemp seed tabbouleh , a garden salad, and some black olives and sprouts. Speaking of which, th...

Ottawa Eats: Naji's Lebanese Restaurant

Image
What's better than a spontaneous dinner date before a night out to the theatre? An amazing spontaneous dinner date that fulfills a craving that you've had for months, and that's discounted through Groupon, that's what! There's been a new Lebanese restaurant in the neighbourhood that I've been wanting to try since it moved in months ago and today was the day. Naji's  is a wonderful little place right by Bank Street and Second Avenue that has just brought a whole new world of flavour to the Glebe. Apparently, I have to come to terms with the reality that there is a compartment in my stomach dedicated purely to digesting falafels, and since it's been about a month since I had any, it was time to replenish its stock. Conveniently, right in time for out date night, I found a Groupon for Naji's and I was sold. Though I didn't get any good pictures of the inside of the place, it was really nice; warm colours, really simple but classy decor, and i...

Falafel Madness

Image
The first night my parents came over to visit a few weeks ago, we had them over so I could make a raw feast for them. Given their taste for foods from all around the world, I knew I wanted to introduce them to their first 100% raw meal by doing something a little more exotic than just raw pasta or the like. After scouring my brain for my own recipes and a couple raw cookbooks, I settled on the following: Marinated Peppers & Portobello Caps* Soaked & Sprouted Quinoa with Saffron, Pepitas, Sundried Tomatoes, and Raisins Matt Amsden 's Falafel Balls served with Mango Chutney *marinated in ACV, EVOO, Bragg's liquid aminos, maple syrup, and herbs  I also served cucumber and tomato canapes with peppered raw cheese to start and a spring mix salad with walnuts, cranberries, tomatoes, and cukes served with a vinaigrette with the main meal. The result: They loved  it. In fact, they loved it so much they talked about it for the following three d...

A Life Full of Success

Image
Oh the successes, I have known this week! There's nothing like a 6 day camping festival surrounded by friends old and new, fire-lit drum circles, pine woods and cool rivers to completely rejuvenate you and make you feel alive. These past few days have been extremely curative for me both physically and mentally, and I feel so grateful for the life I have. But on to my successes: Success #1: Mosquito Prevention As I mentioned in my last post , one of the most successful ways to avoid getting bitten by mosquitos is to avoid potassium foods a few days prior to and during your camping trip. So it's been no bananas, pumpkin seeds, strawberries, whole grains, and brazil nuts for us for almost 10 days now and the mosquito bite tally: 5 over 6 days, while everybody else was massively attacked. I don't know if it's the raw diet or potassium or both but it worked so well that at one point, we were talking to a friend and all the mosquitos were swarming around him while we just sa...
