EAT: WIAW Same old, same old...

Image
Time for another What I Ate Wednesday post! I've only done one other before... The problem with any WIAW post of mine is that they'd all probably end up looking pretty much the same, changing up maybe only every season... conveniently, my constance means when I forget to take pictures, I can just recycle some old ones. Breakfast: My favourite Green Smoothie (note the obvious photo recycling thanks to the dead giveaway of the Christmas table runner) At this point, I've probably had this smoothie over 500 times in my life considering it's been my go-to breakfast for a few years now. I would do something different, but I don't, because it's just so yummy. Mid-Day Snack: Raw   Granola Crunchies These crunchies have also become my replacement cereal option since I went raw. I now cut the liquid sweetener all together from the recipe and just used pureed dates (dates and little bit of water to make it mixable). The batch I had today were the same ...

Juice Pulp Makeover: Raw Carrot Cake Crunchies

Image
I figured "Juice pulp makeover" was a much nicer title than "Re-using your juice pulp" or "What to do with the chunky stuff left in your juicer." Call it my precursor to Earth Day recipe. But wait... Me? Juicing? For those of you know me or have been following me for a while, I'm not the biggest fan of juicing. There's something about separating the sugars from the fibres from your fruit that I'm not totally convinced with (in terms of what it means to eat the most naturally possible), but I've heard enough good things that I can be swayed when it's cleansing season. Being me, I can never just throw away all the stuff that comes out the other end of the juicer. While I'd have no problem chucking a pack of Oreos if a friend forgot them at our place (I just realized I don't think I have any friends that eat Oreos... hmm), I can't justify throwing out something that is still food to me. And of course, by throwing out, I mean...

Just... Want... Kitchen... Time...

So, if you want to know what has happened to me since those days of yore of daily blogging, I think this explains it quite well: I call it... the PhD This means I've been really antsy because that means more time vegetating studiously writing in front of the computer and less time being creative in the kitchen. On the upside, another hoop jam (as in a hooping party not, a fruit preserve) saved my life this evening. Seriously, best thing ever, try it ! Getting into my dance trance while still being focused enough to spin a hoop is the most wonderful feeling. It's so curative, especially because I've been in such a dance rut recently... Anyway, my kitchen time has been pretty productive. I've made a beautiful love child between Meredith 's and my "grawnola" recipes, which has just about spawned the best thing ever: You know I don't take measurements, but the general idea was replacing Meredith's use of raw pepitas and sunflo...

I am Great!

Image
...I am, I guess, but that's also the name of Cafe Gratitude's Granola recipe that was ready this morning. It called for cranberries, but I wasn't sure if they meant dried or fresh, so I went with fresh. It's made me discover how amazing the taste of dehydrated cranberries are! My uncertainty over dried or fresh cranberries came at a perfect time, as I've just been going through a personal cranberry crisis. See, the problem is that all the organic dried cranberries I have found are all dried with organic cane sugar and some form of oil... Not so raw. Alternatively, I also found some versions sweetened with fruit juice, but when I do, they aren't organic. This way I've been forced to choose between sugar or pesticides... I've decided to pick the third option: neither. Problem is, I've really missed cranberries! Why the obsession though? Aside from being super tasty, cranberries are most notorious for helping prevent and treat urinary tract infections....

The ultimate superfood

Image
If I were stuck on a deserted island and could only bring one superfood what would it be? Spirulina for sure! (Though that might seem a dumb idea since there would probably be seaweed all around my deserted island...) Mesquite would probably be my second. But spirulina, the world's tastiest blue-green algae, is truly an amazing product! By being a superfood, it obviously contains all your essential amino acids, as well as every other non-essential amino acid, phytonutrient, minerals, and vitamin you could ever think of (and many that you probably didn't even know existed... for more detail, you can find the info here ). So yep, that includes the elusive B12, so feared and honored by vegans and raw foodists. Spirulina's breakdown is about 55- 77% protein, about 20% carb, 5% healthy fat, and is super rich in minerals, and fiber! Who could ask for more? If all of that wasn't enough, spirulina helps support the immune system, cardiovascular health, is a powerful an...
