Tastes & Textures

Image
Oops... Time slipped by last night and I forgot to post. I'm hoping that posting early enough will make that go unnoticed. One of the things I love to figure out when preparing foods, whether raw or not, is aspiring to combine tastes and textures in creative and tasty new ways. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes pretty simple to know which ingredient will go nicely with another, how to mix sweet and salty, crunchy and soft, foods with a bite with foods that are 'thicker', etc. However, one of the challenges with raw foods is how to actually make things edible. Obviously I don't mean how to make them tasty, that's definitely not the hard part, but how to actually make one able to pick up the food you they're served without making a mess. Some foods were by definition not meant to be eaten in a non-messy fashion, think burritos or burgers or nachos or something, but some things were, like most desserts. While it can be a challenge to make a wrap stuffed with ...

12 Week Plan: Day 2

Image
Lovin' the snow days! Love 'em so much I get another one tomorrow! Great thing is that the gym is still open so I got to start up my super 12 week workout plan. I'm amazed by how easily I can get through workouts now, how motivated I am to go to the gym, and just how far I've come since I started working out regularly now about 5 or 6 years ago. Workout of the Day (very slightly amended workout from Sam Omidi's website , I'm getting a lot of my ideas from him this time) - 5 minute warm-up on elliptical (moderate intensity) -10 minutes of interval training on treadmill (1 minute sprints and rests) -Ab Cycle: Stability Ball Crunch x 15 Stability Ball Rollout x12 Straight Leg Raises x 12 Stability Ball Back Extensions x 10 30 second plank for each side (front, left, & right side) -5 minutes of jump rope (requires a lot more coordination than you think to do it non-stop!) -Second Ab Cycle Repeat-10 minutes of interval training on elliptical (same as earlier, but...

"No school! No school!" & my super 12 Week Workout Plan

Image
First off, I love that feeling when you first get info rmed that you have no school. I remember getting up in the morning as a kid, running downstairs to ask my dad if the news said we had school, waiting impatiently for the verdict. Whenever I knew a big storm was coming, I was the kind of kid who would run out on the deck and do a snow dance (okay... maybe I still kind of do them) just to increase my luck. I just got an email saying that we don't have classes for the second day in a row, and though I'm the first person who'll say I actually do love to go them, I'm as a giddy as a five year old right now! Yep, this is what we're getting hit by: Winter wonderland aside, I did promise that today I would be unveiling my super new 12 week workout/food program. So what am I doing exactly? Workout: Nothing very different from the usual actually, I just scoured some of my favourite workout books, old routines of mine and websites for ideas yesterday, and I've tried ...

Cookie Comfort

I love the world when there is just snow, when all is quiet, when the cars don't dare come out. That's been the state of DC since friday afternoon and it's been wonderful! When the quiet does break it's with the sounds of happiness. I wonder if people realize how much happier they are when the cars aren't running, how they actually talk to one another and share in the similar experiences. I've seen people on cross-country skies, sleds, and walking the happiest looking dogs! I'm sending out a care package up to my cousin, who is up at Brown, and it's also high time I posted a new recipe. To deal with the snow and cold, I'm sending up some superfood mix (goji berries, turkish mulberries, cacao nibs), hemp-based lip balm, some of Amazing Gras s 's Green Super Food, and yummy baked vegan goods. I figured that one of the best things to do to cope with the cold winter days is nothing better than the epitome of comfort baking: oatmeal raisin cookies! Th...

Snow, chocolate, and bananas

Image
So the massive DC snow storm has finally arrived, and it is quite the sight! It's absolutely gorgeous and will definitely lead to a relaxing indoor day tomorrow (and by relaxing I mean catching up on lots of school work). I've just been reading about mono-dieting, and it would seem like something fun to do as a cleanse. In one interview, Pam Boteler , a raw vegan athlete who was an undefeated National Sprint Canoeing champion for 8 years in a row, said that her Doctor (the famous Dr. Doug Graham ) had her just eat bananas for one week straight. While she said the physical effects were amazing and it was one of her best weeks of training, it was a huge mental and emotional challenge. One part of me would like to actually get into the 'just eat fruit' for a week plan, but I'm also the person who would like to go on a 'real' juice fast and still can't stick with it, so... each thing in it's own time! Workout of the Day 20 minutes HIIT + 5 minutes warmup...

Call National Security, it's... SNOW!

Coming from having lived in Canada for four years, I find it very silly to see the whole area go up in a mad panic the minute snow is being announced on the forecast. Today was one such day. Okay, there is suppose to be between 1-2 feet of snow fall tomorrow beginning in the afternoon, but this desperate fear that our lifestyles might temporarily be put on hold is outstanding. The panic around 'I might not be able to get my latte today', or 'what if I can't watch TV this weekend' just shows how unplugged we've become from nature, each other, and just knowing how to live without outside inputs. I'm helping run a conference through my program this weekend (bad timing, I know!) and had to do a Costco run to pick up some items for coffee breaks and breakfast, and was amazed when I got to the place bright and early to find it already jam-packed with people on a week day. It only took me a few seconds before I realized... oh no, it's the usual DC-area armaged...

Raw Adventure Take 3: The Planning Phase

Image
Sometimes when I travel, I just like to wing it: pick a destination and then just stop wherever you want a long the way, no schedule, no plans, just discovery. At other times, I like the structure of knowing exactly where I'm going to stay, and what I am going to do, just to feel more secure. And hey, when I get to my destination, sure, I can still amend my schedule and take things as they come. Recently, I've kind of found my traveling comfort zones, I like to mix structure with spontaneity, I want to know where I'm sleeping and have a rough idea of the places I should scope out, but the rest is up the Universe. Being on a raw diet has put minor constraints on spontaneity though. Now, I simply feel I need to look up a new place to see if there is anywhere we can actually eat: do they have raw food? organic food? etc. It definitely has never stopped me from going somewhere, but it does make things just a tad more challenging. At the same time, because of that, I can now tot...
