Pomp, Circumstance, Irish Moss and Changing Pace

Where was I yesterday? I was getting ready: For the crowning moment of the past two years of my life: The day didn't happen without its share of toil and trouble: it all began with my big family grad dinner getting postponed because my mom and my grandmother are actually really sick. However, my mom is an amazing trooper and managed to make it out to my graduation ceremony despite not feeling well. After not being sure whether my mom would make it or not, I got off the phone just to get an email saying that my diploma was damaged by the printer and they didn't notice until the day of, meaning... no diploma for me. Really?! Who does that actually happen to? Me apparently, but better me that someone with worse coping mechanisms! And they're supposedly sending it to me by mail anyway. However, my amazing sister and her boyfriend saved the day. After the ceremony that both my parents and Andrew made it to, the two of them took us to dinner and to see Iron Man 2. Because my sis ...

Perfecting the Taco

Image
Because it's our anniversary and I should be doing other things, here's a quick post for the day: For those who want a little more spice in their life, I've reworked on last week 's taco recipe and also revisiting Alissa Cohen's corn tortillas. While I didn't change any of the tortilla ingredients I tried to fold/curve them halfway into the dehydrating process so they'd actually be shaped like taco shells. It worked quite well! Because I was in the mood for something a bit more spicy. Here is my latest spicy taco meat recipe. I warm you in advance, it's not super crazy but it's also not for the weak of heart! Spicy Taco Meat 1/2 C walnuts 1/2 C almonds 1/2 Chipotle Pepper en Adobo* 1 tsp Cumin 1 tsp BBQ Spices 2 tsp Bragg's 2 tsp Olive Oil 1 tsp agave nectar or maple syrup dash of salt *I also used the adobo sauce. The chipotle en adobo can be found at Whole Foods in a tin can (not raw, I know, but I'm using up our last batch because they are...

Man Wednesdays: Gratitude

I'd say I'm too shy too post this or that this is too persona, but who am I kidding not to want to make this public in the? Another Man Wednesday post which we'll try to be more regular about just in time for a special day. P.S. I love you too: Is there something unseemly about posting about someone while guest writing on their blog? Does this fall under conflict of interest or patronage or could I spin it as being similar to writing the foreword of a book? It's probably moot as Chantal may be too humble to post this anyway, but, tomorrow being our anniversary, I wanted to take this week to write of all the things she has brought to my life. Okay, not all things. That would be a novel. Perhaps a choice sampling. Most relevant to this blog I guess is my raw diet. I own that I would have never had the herewithal to take up such a diet without the support, encouragement and knowledge that she lends me every day. The words "changed my life" are so over-used these...

The Two Flavors that Rocked my World

Image
Today was another day of wonderful flavour pairing. It began with a good old strawberry-banana-pineapple smoothie (what makes this simple combination so wonderful??). And it continued with some more raw ice cream kitchen fun. I tried to recreate the two flavours I used to have every single time I used to go to an ice cream parlor. Really, I think from the age of about 8 through 14 all I ever had was coffee and lemon ice cream. I remember announcing to my family once that I would travel the world and only ever order those two flavour. Then I figured I would be a global expert in coffee and lemon ice cream. I could tell you that the best lemon could be found in a small town in the South of France, and the best coffee was in Rome. I'd say I got pretty far, given how much I got to travel. However, I was easily tempted by other flavours after a few years, usually by something berry-wonderful like cassis (black currants) or black raspberry... then I discovered pear sorbet at the infamous...

Cookie Madness

So apparently, I can't survive one day back home without making some form of unbaked good... While it fills our house with yummy goodness, I have to say it doesn't agree 100% with my stomach. This is purely based on my own experience and intuition, but if there is one way I can caution you to stay 100% healthy and happy on a raw diet it's to stick with raw fruits and veggies as close to 100% as possible. On those days I feel fantabulous. The more dehydrated treats I eat, the less happy I find myself in terms of physical well-being (whether it's general health, body image, etc.). Though a handful of nuts, seeds, and dried fruit are a definite necessity, going over that allotment usually has negative emotional and physical consequences for me. I also find them kind of addicting, the more of them I eat, the more of them I feel I need. It's all about moderation, and I haven't been able to keep that in check recently. Obsessive? Perhaps. But I want to feel optimal, a...

Home at Last?

There is a certain guilt factor to not blogging for a few days when you've become a daily blogger. At the same time, I do recognize when some of the blogs I follow take a much deserved break/vacation/hiatus. I say this in part because of the two long weekend trips we've taken for the past two weeks, and again, because moving madness may make things a little bit sporadic for the next month or so. Our family trip to Chincoteague, VA ended up being as amazing as I had expected. We used to go there all the time when I was little and I hadn't been there in just under 10 years. The beautiful thing about small towns and wildlife refuges is that they really don't change in that amount of time. Unlike the city that is constantly on the move, some places just slip past time like it doesn't even exist. I like to return to those places, it helps me retain some sort of peace and helps ground me in this crazy busy world. As traditions goes, our trip started with some fishing and ...

I am Great!

Image
...I am, I guess, but that's also the name of Cafe Gratitude's Granola recipe that was ready this morning. It called for cranberries, but I wasn't sure if they meant dried or fresh, so I went with fresh. It's made me discover how amazing the taste of dehydrated cranberries are! My uncertainty over dried or fresh cranberries came at a perfect time, as I've just been going through a personal cranberry crisis. See, the problem is that all the organic dried cranberries I have found are all dried with organic cane sugar and some form of oil... Not so raw. Alternatively, I also found some versions sweetened with fruit juice, but when I do, they aren't organic. This way I've been forced to choose between sugar or pesticides... I've decided to pick the third option: neither. Problem is, I've really missed cranberries! Why the obsession though? Aside from being super tasty, cranberries are most notorious for helping prevent and treat urinary tract infections....
